LonelyGirl15 Fights Poverty
by Michael HoffmanThursday, October 12th, 2006
If you don’t know about LonelyGirl15, you should. This is the best example so far of a simple video blog getting big traffic. (Try 500,000 to 1,000,000 views on average for each video uploaded.) And it turns out, LonelyGirl15 was, lets not say a hoax, but fiction. A play. If you don’t know about it, read this article, then come back here.
So LonelyGirl15 was hired by the U.N.’s Millennium Campaign to get the word out about poverty. Listen to the NPR story if you haven’t heard it. It is a great idea. Hopefully she is doing it pro-bono. But again we see the power of inexpensive content. She is (somewhat) interesting and I wonder how many (much more) interesting nonprofit staffers we have out there who could be sharing with us some of their day-to-day struggles and victories.
