Don’t forget New Orleans

I haven’t been hearing too much about New Orleans. And what I have been hearing isn’t good. Crime seems out of control, the rebuilding doesn’t seem to be moving too fast. It’s a long way from the promises we heard after Katrina. And in the context of the resources going to Iraq — whatever you feel about it — it’s obscene that we aren’t taking care of our own with as much effort.
There is an organization called Levees.org that is trying to bring some attention to a particular aspect of this issue. They are basically telling people to stop thinking about New Orleans as the victim of a natural disaster. The destruction in New Orleans was due to the failure of the levees, failures that could have been avoided. They point out that there are federal levees all over this country, putting millions at risk if they are not built and maintained properly. Here’s their PSA video that is the featured video today on DoGooderTV.
